OSWEGO, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Musa Sackoon (North Plainfield, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) provided a pair of goals and the William Paterson men's soccer team (1-0) started its season with a 3-2 victory against Houghton (1-1) Sept. 4 in the first round of the Oswego State Tournament.
Freshman forward Ben Lawrence gave the Highlanders the early edge when his shot deflected off a WP defender and into the net 16:30 into the match, but Sackoon answered 82 seconds later with the equalizer.
Sophomore midfielder
JP Gonzales (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) made it a 2-1 Pioneer lead 2:10 before halftime with an unassisted strike, and Sackoon doubled that advantage at the 69:54 mark with another unassisted goal.
Freshman Zach Shilvock finished the scoring for Houghton in the 85th minute.
Senior
Nico Martirano (Madison, N.J./Madison) did not register a save for WP and the Highlanders' Jacob Dunnett had four stops as the Pioneers owned a 20-7 shot advantage.
William Paterson will face Oswego State in the championship match Saturday, Sept. 5, at 3:00 p.m.
