Softball Forces NCAA Tournament Regional Final Winner-Take-All Game with 2-0 Win

Second-Seeded Pioneers Defeat Top-Seeded Kean

Video Highlights

UNION, N.J. – Second-seeded William Paterson (30-12-1) forced a winner-take-all-game to determine the 2015 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Union (N.J.) Regional champion by defeating top-seeded Kean (27-12-1), 2-0, May 10. The two teams will meet again at 2:30 p.m.

The Pioneers produced a pair of third-inning runs. Sophomore pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) knocked a two-out single through the left side of the infield and was replaced by pinch runner Zigmary Colon (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech), while sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) followed with a base hit into left field. Senior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) then belted a double off the fence in right, driving in Colon, and Fryer crossed the plate thanks to a throwing error on the play, making it a 2-0 game.

Podmajersky was able to get out of a jam during the top of the second with two runners on and one out, inducing a groundout and a lineout. The Cougars used a hit by pitch to get the leadoff batter aboard in the fifth and sacrificed her to second, but a flyout and popup ended the threat. Kean nearly got the tying run to the plate to start the seventh, but sophomore Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) made a diving play in the hole at short and threw out the leadoff hitter from her knees. A three-pitch strikeout accounted for the second out of the inning, and a popup to first base ended the game.

Principe finished 1-for-3 with a two-run double, and Nicole Fryer, Kim Fryer and Podmajersky accounted for the other WP hits.

Podmajersky struck out four without issuing a walk (13-6) and allowed just one hit, a single to center to open the top of the second inning.

Senior Courtney Yard took the loss (21-8), giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout.
