Video Highlights WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore pitcher
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tossed a no-hitter as third-seeded William Paterson (27-9-1, 13-5 NJAC) opened the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament with a 5-0 victory against fourth-seeded The College of New Jersey (19-11, 12-6 NJAC) April 28.
Top-seeded Rowan will host the remainder of the double-elimination tourney Friday-Sunday, May 1-3. The Pioneers will next face second-seeded Ramapo (25-11-1, 13-4-1 NJAC) Friday at 3:00 p.m.
WP wasted no time, scoring all five of its runs during the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led off with a base hit up the middle, and senior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) followed with a bunt straight back to the pitcher. TCNJ's Ashtin Helmer threw to second in an attempt to get the lead runner, but the toss was wide and both runners were safe. After a wild pitch, sophomore shortstop
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) hit a chopper through the left side, plating
Nicole Fryer for the game's first run. Two Pioneer outs led to a hit by pitch for junior left fielder
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) and an RBI-single through the left side by sophomore catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South). Senior second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, and she cleared them with her triple to right-center field, making it a 5-0 WP lead.
Podmajersky was one walk shy of a perfect game, issuing a base on balls to lead off the top of the third inning. She finished with six strikeouts. It was the first WP no-hitter since April 1, 2005, when Diana Schraer was one error away from a perfect game during a 7-0 win against John Jay.
Helmer (8-4) allowed five unearned runs on four hits during the first inning, and junior Katie Hourihan tossed the final 5.0 shutout innings and gave up one hit and a walk.
