Dys Carries No-Hitter into Sixth Inning, Softball Sweeps Drew

Pioneers Post 5-3, 4-0 Victories

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior pitcher Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the closing game as the William Paterson softball team (16-9-1) earned a 5-3, 4-0 sweep against visiting Drew (5-21) April 13.

Game One
Senior designated player Keanna Ross (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) hit a three-run homer as WP started the day with a 5-3 victory.

Sophomore right fielder Phylicia Pellot started the game with a solo home run to left, and the Rangers owned a quick 1-0 advantage.

The Pioneers answered with a three-run bottom of the first. Senior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) and sophomore shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) reached base thanks to one-out errors, and after a foulout, Ross hit her first career homer over the left-field fence.

Sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) started the third inning with a triple to right center, and three batters later senior catcher Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) drove her in with a single through the left side to make it a 4-1 game.

WP added one run in the bottom of the fourth, as freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) drew a leadoff walk, junior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) had an infield single and senior first baseman Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) put down a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch during Nicole Fryer's base on balls allowed Poretti to scamper home from third base.

A Brooke Adams single down the right-field line and a Heather Ronchi base hit and error gave Drew a run during the top of the sixth inning. The Rangers then added another score in the seventh, thanks to base hits by senior first baseman/pitcher Laura D'Ornellas and freshman second baseman Danielle Martinez, a sac bunt and a single to center by sophomore shortstop Meghan McGuire.

Six different Pioneers accounted for WP's six hits. Sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) improved to 7-4, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts and one walk over 7.0 innings.

Starter Amy Benedict took the loss (2-4) for Drew, giving up three hits and four runs (one earned) in 3.0 innings, striking out one. D'Ornellas tossed the final 3.0 innings of three-hit, one-run ball while compiling three strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two
William Paterson finished off the doubleheader with a 4-0 win.

The Pioneers broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wasilak sent a one-out single through the right side and sophomore catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) had a base hit to the shortstop before a flyout and Poretti walk to load the bases. Pinch hitter Rouse knocked a base hit through the right side of the infield, plating two runs.

WP added two more in the sixth. Kim Fryer started off with a single to center and was sacrificed to second by freshman third baseman Sam Rothenberger (Livingston, N.J./Livingston). Poretti doubled to right center to bring in the first run, and after Wimmershoff reached on an error, Dys hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Poretti.

Kim Fryer was 2-for-3 and scored two runs, and Rouse had two RBI. Dys (3-1) faced three batters over the minimum, seeing her no-hitter broken up by a sixth-inning Pellot infield single.

Sophomore Emma Agostini (1-7) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks, striking out one.

William Paterson will play at New Jersey City Tuesday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m.
