CLERMONT, FLA. – The No. 20 William Paterson softball team (9-3) finished its stay at the NTC Spring Games March 21 with an 8-0, five-inning victory against Lawrence (2-2) and a 3-0 win against Carthage (0-2).
Game OneThe Pioneers were able to close out Lawrence early, invoking the run rule with an 8-0 victory in five innings.
WP jumped out to a 3-0 lead during the home half of the third inning. Senior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) started the frame by reaching on an error, and another error on a batted ball from sophomore right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) was enough to allow both runners to touch home. Senior second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) singled through the left side and was lifted for freshman pinch runner
Carly Satter (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional), and sophomore third baseman
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) followed with a base hit to shortstop. Senior designated player
Kristen Gardner (Audubon, N.J./Methacton) then hit an RBI-single to right field for a 3-0 margin.
Three more runs scored in the fourth. Principe tripled to left field to lead off, and after a groundout, Satter reached base thanks to a fielder's choice that drove in Principe. An error left Satter at third and Wasilak on first, followed by a Gardner groundout that plated Satter. Senior catcher
Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) then delivered Wasilak with a double to left.
A base on balls for junior left fielder
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) and a single by Principe resulted in a two-run triple by
Nicole Fryer for an 8-0 score.
Gardner was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and Principe, Austin and Rouse each added two hits.
Senior
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) improved to 2-0, scattering two hits and striking out one.
Kara Vance took the loss for Lawrence, allowing eight hits and six runs (two earned) with one strikeout and a walk over 4.0 innings.
Game TwoThe Pioneers wrapped the day up with a 3-0 victory against Carthage.
WP broke through in the top of the third. Wimmershoff drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by sophomore pitcher
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South).
Nicole Fryer hit a grounder to the left side of the infield and Wimmershoff came far enough off the bag to keep the fielder's attention, and the throw back to second was not in time, allowing Fryer to reach on a fielder's choice. Wasilak followed with a hard-hit ground ball through the right side of the infield, plating Wimmershoff for a 1-0 edge.
Wimmershoff drilled a two-run homer to left, plating sophomore catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) who had reached on an error, to make it a 3-0 score in the fourth.
Five different Pioneers accounted for WP's five hits. Podmajersky (2-2) tossed the complete-game shutout, striking out seven and walking one with three hits.
Makenzie Walker (0-1) allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits during 5.0 innings inside the circle for Carthage with six strikeouts and two walks.
William Paterson will have its home opener Thursday, March 26, playing a doubleheader against Drew at 3:00 p.m.
