Men’s Soccer Rally Falls Just Short at Haverford

Pierre Provides Offense for Pioneers in 2-1 Loss

Junior Aken Pierre scored once and nearly provided the equalizer at Haverford.
Box Score HAVERFORD, PA. – A furious second-half rally came up just short as the William Paterson men's soccer team (1-2) suffered a 2-1 loss at Haverford (2-0) Sept. 6 in the first round of the Jimmy Mills Tournament.

The Fords got on the scoreboard in the 14th minute when Colin Seitz found his brother Brady in the right corner of the box and he finished the pass. Haverford made it 2-0 in the 40th minute when Ben Field received a pass from Matt Clausen as he took the ball down to the touchline on the right side. Clausen's pass was touched to Field, who scored to the far post.

Junior back Aken Pierre (North Plainfield, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) collected his second goal of the season, connecting on sophomore Tyler Burd's (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) corner kick at the 75:58 mark.

The Pioneers were inches away from tying the match in the 84th minute after Pierre made his second run at goal but saw his header bounce off the right post and get cleared out of harm's way. William Paterson's final quality scoring chance came with just seconds remaining on the clock. After WP played a pass into the box, Haverford keeper Sam Miller came off his line and collided with a striker bearing down on the ball. The collision left the ball free and Miller out of position to defend his net, but the Pioneers sent the shot high over the crossbar.

Sophomore Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) made one save in 21:04 of action before being forced off the field due to an injury. Freshman Sal Fazio (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) played the remainder of the contest and registered three stops. Miller finished with six saves for the Fords.

William Paterson will face No. 18 Scranton Sunday, Sept. 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the second round of the Jimmy Mills Tournament.
