WAYNE, N.J. – A penalty stroke in double overtime spoiled the William Paterson field hockey team's (0-1) bid for a season-opening win, allowing visiting FDU-Florham (1-0) to secure a 3-2 victory Aug. 29.

A flurry of Devil shots and Meg Davies (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) saves ended when FDU-Florham was awarded a penalty stroke, and sophomore Kim Davis lifted it into the top-left corner of the cage 54 seconds into the second overtime period for the game winner.

It was Davis who broke open the scoring, turning and firing from six yards out for a 1-0 Devil lead15:43 into the contest. Just 81 seconds before halftime, Pioneer freshman Katie Stetser (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) evened the contest, taking a Courtnaey Chelf (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional) pass and converting from seven yards in front of goal.

Junior Angelica Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) handed WP its first lead of the contest, cleaning up a scramble in front of the cage with a shot to the lower-left corner in the 44th minute.

A series of shots resulted in freshman Jodie Crutchley getting the equalizer at the 63:00 mark.

Davies made 14 saves for the Pioneers, and sophomore Samantha Klimaszewski had one stop for FDU-Florham.

William Paterson will host New Paltz Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7:00 p.m.
