Video Highlights WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman
Chris Noel (Edison, N.J./Edison) picked an opportune time to score his first career points, netting the golden goal 1:59 into the extra session to hand the William Paterson men's soccer team (8-7-2, 3-4-1 NJAC) a crucial 1-0 overtime Senior Day victory against visiting The College of New Jersey (6-9-2, 2-6 NJAC Oct. 25.
Senior midfielder
Rafael Marques (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) sent a pass to Noel on the right side of the box, and he fought off his defender and blasted a second-effort shot into the net for the game winner. The victory was a crucial one for the Pioneers, who are vying for a top-six finish and a spot in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament. Sitting in seventh place, WP must win its regular-season finale Wednesday, Oct. 29, at New Jersey City at 3:00 p.m., and also will need some help from one of the three teams tied for fourth place (Richard Stockton, Kean, Rowan) in order to qualify.
Both teams had quality scoring chances during the opening period. Senior back
Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) sent a diving header just wide of the right post off a cross in the 17th minute, and Lion sophomore midfielder Jason O'Donnell headed one off the post three minutes later. Junior midfielder
Mike Conte (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) blasted a ball just over the cross bar from 25 yards away 10 minutes before halftime.
Junior midfielder
Carlos Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) hit a one-timer high after a pretty pass slotted from the end line by Hackett in the 65th minute, and Hackett nearly knocked in a loose, bouncing ball two minutes later. TCNJ freshman Michael Kassak was sprung on a mini break up the middle of field with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, but sophomore keeper
Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) was able to make the save. Kassak had another chance on a breakaway in the 88th minute, but his looping shot over a charging Diacheysn was wide right.
Diacheysn made two saves for the Pioneers, and senior Maciej Libucha tallied 14 stops for TCNJ. WP owned a 28-6 shot advantage.
Prior to the match, William Paterson honored its three seniors -- Hackett, midfielder
Omar Jallow (Union City, N.J./Union City) and Marques.
