Field Hockey Rolls to a 6-2 Victory Against Union

Cox and J. Giammetta Score Twice for Pioneers

Box Score WAYNE, N.J. – Paced by five-point performances from senior forwards Brianne Cox (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton Twp.) and Jacqui Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), the William Paterson field hockey team (2-1) defeated Union College (1-3), 6-2, in their home opener Sept. 7.

The Pioneers set the tone early when Giammetta directed a pass from Cox into the back of the cage just 1:35 into the game. Sophomore forward Angelica Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) added to WP's lead in the fifth minute, finding a Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) pass in a scramble in front of the cage.

At the 11:01 mark, sophomore forward Felicia Wetzel (Hardyston, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) found junior midfielder Courtnaey Chelf (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional) who blasted a shot from just inside the circle to extend WP's lead to 3-0.

Union got on the board in the 34th minute when Hannah Najar collected a rebound and directed it into the back of the cage to bring the score to 3-1.

At the 39:06 mark, Cox collected a pass from Wetzel and scored in a scramble in front of the cage to give the Pioneers a 4-1 lead. Cox recorded her second goal of the contest just over a minute later when she knocked in a Jacqui Giammetta pass to put WP ahead by four goals.

Alexi Steriti scored on a penalty stroke for Union in the 46th minute to bring the score to 5-2. Jacqui Giammetta recorded her second goal at the 58:07 mark, directing a McKenna Reynolds (Delran, N.J./Delran) pass past the goalie to give the Pioneers a 6-2 lead.

Senior Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made four saves to earn the win and sophomore Megan Davies (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) blocked one shot for WP. Molly McCune recorded eight saves for Union, taking the loss.

William Paterson will host DeSales Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
