WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (5-2-1, 0-1 NJAC) suffered a 2-1 loss to New Jersey City (4-3, 1-0 NJAC) in both teams' New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener Sept. 21 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
Following a scoreless first half, each side had a quality chance during the first five minutes of the second period. Freshman forward
Leandro Lemache (Carteret, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) saw his point-blank shot stopped two minutes in, and sophomore Aboubacar Diawara had a breakaway up the middle of the field, but WP freshman goalkeeper
Matt Hernandez (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) snuffed out the opportunity.
Junior Kelvin Flores broke the scoreless deadlock in the 59th minute, working himself free on the left side of the box and rattling a shot off the right post and into the net. Diawara made it a 2-0 Gothic Knight lead at the 73:52 mark, receiving a quick pass in the center of the six from Mohamed Conteh, who was near the right post, and burying it for his fifth goal of the year.
Junior back
Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) scored his first of the year, heading in senior
Matt Nigro's (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) corner kick with 3:31 remaining.
Hernandez made two saves for the Pioneers, and junior Ruben Morales had five stops for NJCU.
William Paterson will visit No. 10 Montclair State Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 7:00 p.m.
