Field Hockey Loses Nail Biter in Overtime, 3-2

Pioneers Can’t Hold Off Kean Surge after Building Quick 2-0 Lead

Senior Jessica Nendze posted her fifth goal of the season Sept. 17 at Kean.
Box Score UNION, N.J. – William Paterson (4-2, 0-1 NJAC) put Kean (7-0, 1-0 NJAC) on its heels with a pair of quick strikes, but the Cougars rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) field hockey action Sept. 17.

Senior forward Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) dribbled in from 25 yards out and unleashed a shot from the left side, putting the Pioneers on the scoreboard at the 15:20 mark. The goal, just the second given up this season by Kean, marked the first time that the Cougars had trailed this fall.

WP made it a 2-0 score six minutes later when senior forward Brianne Cox (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton Twp.) finished a scramble in front of goal off a Felicia Wetzel (Hardyston, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) penalty corner.

Kean got one back 96 seconds before halftime as Stephanie Soares deflected in a long shot. Bridgette Bottinelli evened things up at the 41:04 mark, knocking in Claire Keenan's pass.

Both teams had scoring opportunities, but it wasn't until 2:09 into the extra time that one resulted in a goal. Soares cleaned up a rebound for her second score of the night and the game winner.

Senior Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made 12 saves for the Pioneers, and Katie DiCarlo posted eight stops for Kean.

William Paterson will visit Drew Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
