Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had a five-point effort, including the Pioneers' final two goals, as the William Paterson field hockey team (1-0) began its season with a 3-2 victory at FDU-Florham (0-1) Sept. 1.
Senior
Jacqui Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) handed WP an early 1-0 lead, knocking in a Nendze pass just 1:52 into the contest. The Devils' Lanie Andrews tied the score six minutes later, but Nendze found the back of the cage in the 16th minute, an unassisted goal that made it a 2-1 margin.
FDU-Florham took advantage of a penalty corner at the end of the first period as Andrews scored her second goal of the day, sending the teams into intermission tied at 2-2. Nendze broke the deadlock with 5:55 remaining, another unassisted strike for the game-winning goal.
Senior
Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made 11 stops for WP, and Tess Loughren had 10 saves for FDU-Florham.
William Paterson will play at New Paltz Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 4:00 p.m.
