MADISON, N.J. – Eighth-seeded William Paterson (9-9-3) had a number of quality chances but couldn't continue its upset streak, falling 2-1 to second-seeded Richard Stockton (15-6-2) Nov. 17 in the ECAC Metro Region Men's Soccer Tournament championship match played at FDU-Florham.

The Pioneers had two good opportunities during a choppy first half. Sophomore Jose Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) drilled a shot that caught a piece of the post, then put the rebound just over the crossbar midway through the period, and first-team all-conference senior midfielder Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) sent a ball inches above the bar with less than a minute remaining. The two teams entered the intermission scoreless.

Senior forward Hugh Riley (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) just missed outside of the left post during the first minute of the second period, and WP freshman goalkeeper Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) snuffed out an Anthony Colofranson bullet with a diving stop to his left 21 minutes later.

The Ospreys got on the board in the 75th minute when Tyler Mills sent a long free kick curving into the box and Clevon McPherson got his boot on it, redirecting the ball into the right side of the goal. Colofranson made it a 2-0 score at the 81:00 mark when he beat Diacheysn to the right post.

Riley cut that lead in half with 5:23 remaining when, with a defender on the ground, he collected and knocked a bouncing ball to the left side of the frame.

Riley nearly tied it up three minutes later with a half-volley from distance that just cleared the right post.

Diacheysn had nine saves for the Pioneers, and Bobby Varga made three stops for Stockton.

William Paterson reached the championship match with a pair of upsets, a 3-0 semifinal victory at fourth-seeded Sage (11-5-4) Nov. 16 after advancing past top-seeded Drew (11-4-5), 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout following a 2-2 double-overtime draw, Nov. 13 in the quarterfinal round.
