Eighth-Seeded Pioneers Defeat Fourth-Seeded Sage in Semifinals

Sophomore Jose Arevalo's first-half goal was all WP needed in a 3-0 ECAC semifinal victory at Sage.
Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – Eighth-seeded William Paterson (9-8-3) punched its ticket to the ECAC Metro Region Men's Soccer Tournament championship match with a 3-0 semifinal victory at fourth-seeded Sage (11-5-4) Nov. 16.

The Pioneers will play in the final Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2:00 p.m. at FDU-Florham and will face the winner of the semifinal match to be played between second-seeded Richard Stockton and third-seeded FDU-Florham Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Making its 12th ECAC Tournament appearance (1972, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1991, 1995, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2013), William Paterson will seek to win its third title (1978, 2008).

After getting past top-seeded Drew, 3-1 during the penalty-kick shootout following a 2-2 double-overtime result in the first round Nov. 13, WP continued its upset streak.

Sophomore Jose Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) beat Sage goalkeeper TJ Zehner, his seventh goal of the season, to hand the Pioneers a 1-0 edge in the 22nd minute.

After a William Paterson attacker was taken down on the right edge of the box, New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) buried the penalty kick at the 57:04 mark.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Conte (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) tacked on a late insurance goal, heading in junior midfielder Rafael Marques' (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) pass with less than six minutes remaining.

WP freshman goalkeeper Mike Diacheysn (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) made four saves for WP, and Zehner and Tim Madden combined for seven stops for the Gators.
