RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A penalty kick with 61 seconds remaining was the difference as the No. 22 William Paterson men's soccer team (1-1) suffered a 2-1 loss at NYU (3-0) Sept. 5.

Santiago Mesa (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) was whistled for bringing down the Violets' Paolo Luciano on the edge of the box with 1:01 showing on the clock. Niki Chow converted the PK for the game winner.

Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 edge in the 73rd minute after junior
Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) played a touch to Hackett, who volleyed a shot to the far corner. Hackett has accounted for all three of WP's goals so far this season.
NYU's Chris Ramirez leveled the match with less than nine minutes to play. Mac Yumoto played a corner kick into the box, where Kyle Green flicked it in front. Ramirez then back-tapped it off his heel and in.
Mesa finished with three saves, and Jonas Poster had one stop for the Violets.
William Paterson will take on Susquehanna Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3:00 p.m. in the first round of the Holiday Inn Conference Center Soccer Classic in York, Pa.
