WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) scored the game winner with 18 seconds remaining as William Paterson (4-3, 2-0 NJAC) stunned No. 6 Montclair State (6-1, 1-1 NJAC), 3-2, in the Pioneers' men's soccer home opener Sept. 19.

WP took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but a 69th-minute Dan Mendoza penalty kick and an Almir Batista goal with 1:29 to play knotted the score at 2-2.

A weak clearance by the MSU defense was won in the air by Hackett, and the ball ended up at the feet of junior Besmir Dzila (Prospect Park, N.J./Dr. Ibrahim Temo), who fed a ball forward.  Hackett ran on and blasted a shot from 25 yards out that tucked in underneath the crossbar, a dramatic game winner that was his fifth goal of the year.

The Pioneers broke the scoreless deadlock in the 21st minute after junior Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) headed a ball back across the goal mouth that pulled out MSU keeper Anthony Rogic.  When Rogic couldn't secure the ball, senior Dan Patton (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) jumped on the opportunity, finishing to an open net.

Senior David Chase (Randolph, N.J./Morristown) made it a 2-0 advantage 13 minutes later, getting on the end of a bouncing ball near the right end line and drilling it along a tough angle into the left side of the goal.

Hackett was whistled for a foul committed against Montclair State's Mike Horan in the box, allowing Mendoza to get MSU on the scoreboard with his PK to the lower-left side of the frame.

After the Red Hawks were awarded a free kick following a foul along the sideline, Joe Borrajo slipped a cross along the wet grass of the box and Batista got on the end of it, redirecting it to complete MSU's comeback from the two-goal deficit.

Sophomore goalkeeper Santiago Mesa (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) posted four saves for the Pioneers, and Rogic collected four stops for Montclair State.

William Paterson will play at Richard Stockton Saturday, Sept. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
