Women’s Soccer Victorious in NJAC Opener, 5-1

Five Players Score for Pioneers against New Jersey City

Senior forward Erika Juricic had a goal and an assist in the Pioneers' 5-1 victory over New Jersey City.

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (3-2-1, 0-1 NJAC) opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play with a 5-1 victory against New Jersey City (1-4-2, 0-1 NJAC) Sept. 15 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Senior midfielder Laela Brock (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) started the scoring for the Pioneers in the seventh minute when Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) found her on a 2v1 breakaway up the middle.

Marabondo took advantage of a New Jersey City hand ball in the box, scoring on a penalty kick at the 9:45 mark for her 10th goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Victoria Lopes (Union, N.J./Union Catholic Regional) added her first career goal on a loose ball in the box in the 37th minute, using an assist from senior forward Erika Juricic (East Windsor, N.J. / Hightstown).

Freshman forward Gina Cowdrick (Island Heights, N.J./Central Regional) found Juricic, who beat the New Jersey City goalkeeper on a one-timer from the left side in the 60th minute.

Senior midfielder Nicole Kufel (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) scored the Pioneers' final goal of the match at the 63:55 mark, converting WP's second penalty kick of the afternoon.

Chelsea Spethmann put New Jersey City on the board in the 67th minute when she blasted a shot past the keeper from outside the box. 

Junior Mary Jane Seiler (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) started in net and played 35:00 for the Pioneers, making one save.  Freshman Kat Clint (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) saw 20:30 of action and made one stop, while junior Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) played the final 34:30 and collected a save.  Brittany Hoffman made 14 saves for the Gothic Knights as WP outshot NJCU, 26-9.  

William Paterson will continue NJAC play Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Montclair State at 7:00 p.m.
