WAYNE, N.J. – Senior
Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) scored twice and the William Paterson women's soccer team (2-2-2) cruised to a 3-1 victory against Centenary (1-3) Sept. 12 in the Pioneers' home opener.
The Cyclones failed to fully clear a WP corner kick in the 16th minute, and senior
Casey McGuigan (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) took advantage, driving a ball to the far left post that classmate
Laela Brock (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) headed in for her third goal of the season.
Sophomore
Alana Keffer (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) was able to spring Marabondo up the left flank for a long breakaway, and Marabondo beat Centenary keeper Megan Williams 1v1 for a 2-0 advantage less than 20 minutes later. For Marabondo, the current ECAC Metro and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Offensive Player of the Week, it was her eighth goal in the Pioneers' sixth match of the year.
Sophomore Laura Potter cut the deficit in half for the Cyclones 10 minutes into the second period, cutting a ball back and firing across the goal into the right side of the frame.
Marabondo finished off the scoring with an 85th-minute insurance goal, beating several defenders up the middle of the field and spinning a ball in off the inside of the right post.
Junior
Mary Jane Seiler (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) played the first half for WP, and classmate
Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) made one second-half save. Williams had 11 stops for Centenary as WP owned a 19-8 shot advantage and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
William Paterson will begin NJAC play Saturday, Sept. 15, at home against New Jersey City at 1:00 p.m.
