BOX SCORE
WAYNE, N.J. – Senior
Ally Hartman (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Twp.) and junior
Jacqui Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) scored for the Pioneers, but the William Paterson field hockey team (0-1) dropped its season opener to visiting FDU-Florham (1-0), 4-2, Aug. 31 at Wightman Stadium.
The Devils got on the scoreboard in the 14th minute when junior Lanie Andrews sent in a back-handed sweep that found its way through the WP defense and into the cage.
That score held up until 4:22 into the second half when sophomore Brittany Jones one-timed Andrews' penalty corner insert, handing FDU-Florham a 2-0 advantage.
Giammetta responded with WP's first goal of the year, a rocket from the top of the circle during a penalty corner in the 48th minute.
Andrews beat Pioneer goalie
Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) 1v1, converting a Rebecca Bruns assist for a 3-1 margin in the 57th minute. Freshman Stephanie Geskes made it a three-goal margin less than two minutes later, driving a ball that bounced across the circle and appeared to brush off a WP stick on its way into the goal.
Hartman finished the scoring in the 68th minute, another hard penalty-corner shot from the top of the circle that was inserted by sophomore
Aubrey Pellerin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central).
Statz made six saves for the Pioneers, and junior Tess Loughran had five stops for FDU-Florham. The Pioneers had several offensive opportunities when Loughran was caught off her line, but could not capitalize for the equalizing goals.
William Paterson will return to action Sunday, Sept. 2, taking on Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. at Misericordia University.
