MONTCLAIR, N.J. – William Paterson (8-12) suffered a 6-1 loss at No. 3 Montclair State (18-1) in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Field Hockey Tournament Nov. 3 at MSU's Sprague Field.
Senior Frances Schaefer broke open the scoring in the 29th minute, knocking in a rebound at the right post. Three minutes later, junior Jennifer Tafro connected on a Brooke Hullings pass, scoring on a shot from the left side of the circle to hand top-seeded MSU a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Hawks doubled their lead with two strikes during the first 2:02 of the second half. Tafro tipped in senior Kate Norgard's free hit at the 36:11 mark, and Schaefer cleaned up a clear attempt 51 seconds later.
Junior Allison Jillions poked a ball in at the right post off a pass from Schaefer, making it a 5-0 margin in the 47th minute.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard at the 53:31 mark when junior
Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) sprinted up the left side on the breakaway and sent a pass across the circle to freshman
Angelica Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), who drilled it into the back of the cage.
Sophomore Abby Erler converted a Sierra Rauchbach pass, scoring from the top-left side of the circle in the 57th minute.
Junior
Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made five saves for fourth-seeded WP, senior back
Shannon Thomas (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) made two defensive saves and senior midfielder
Jaclyn Bertos (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) had one defensive save. Megan Bosland did not make a stop for the Red Hawks.
