WAYNE, N.J. - The William Paterson men's soccer team (6-8-1, 3-4-1 NJAC) was stunned at the buzzer when visiting Rutgers-Newark (12-6, 5-3 NJAC) scored with two seconds left in regulation, handing the Pioneers a 3-2 loss Oct. 20.
The Scarlet Raiders got on the board first in the 25th minute on a shot from the right side of the box by sophomore forward Edgar Abreu.
The Pioneers tied the match two minutes later on a broken corner play. Junior midfielder
Karl Schroeder (Long Valley, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) sent the ball back to junior midfielder
Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro), who then set up junior forward
Hugh Riley (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) for the one timer.
Rutgers-Newark retook the lead at the 31:47 mark when senior midfielder William Munoz buried a one-timer from inside the box.
In the 53rd minute, senior back
Michael Encarnacion (Franklin, N.J./Passaic County Tech) headed the ball past the defenders and drew the Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper out of the box. Senior forward
Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) beat the keeper and sent a shot from the right side into the net.
With just two seconds left in the match, senior midfielder Gabriel Avans blasted a desperation shot from the top of the box that went just over the head of sophomore goalkeeper
Santiago Mesa (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and secured the victory for Rutgers-Newark
Mesa finished with two saves, and freshman Matt Broomall made three stops for the Scarlet Raiders. .
William Paterson will celebrate Senior Night when it hosts Farmingdale State on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7:00 p.m.
