WAYNE, N.J. – Both teams had a number of first-half scoring opportunities, but it was William Paterson (6-6-1) that came away with a 3-1 men's soccer non-conference victory against visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island (8-9) Oct. 16 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

The Golden Eagles seized an early 1-0 lead when Brendan O'Brien played a corner kick short to Justin Heredia, who sent the ball to the far side.  John Dettori headed it in at the left post less than 10 minutes into the contest for his 13th goal of the year.

Sophomore Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J./Immaculate Conception) saw his header cleared off the line, but when senior Wes Ostrzycki (Edison, N.J./Edison) went to track down the ball he was fouled in the box.  Senior back Marcus Rouse (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) buried the PK to knot the score at 1-1 at the 21:42 mark.

WP nearly added to that total two minutes later, but SJ-LI keeper Chris Muhs made a diving stop of a Michael Encarnacion (Franklin, N.J./Passaic County Tech) strike.  Fabio Laves hit the crossbar for St. Joseph's with 19 minutes remaining in the first half, and Bradly Frabizio's blast off a corner kick was cleared off the line by the WP defense four minutes before halftime.

Senior Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) picked his away around defenders near the corner of the box, freeing himself to bury a shot in the lower-right side netting and make it a 3-1 margin in the 51st minute.

Sophomore Ben Horowitz (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) made two saves for the Pioneers, and Muhs finished with 13 for St. Joseph's.

William Paterson will host Muhlenberg Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 7:00 p.m.
