WAYNE, N.J. – Senior forward
Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) broke the William Paterson women's soccer single-season points record and tied the goals top mark as the Pioneers (6-7-2, 3-4 NJAC) shut out visiting Rutgers-Camden (3-12-1, 0-6-1), 8-0, Oct. 13.
Marabondo started the scoring for the Pioneers, as she connected with a short pass from senior midfielder
Nicole Kufel (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) in the sixth minute.
At the 21:22 mark, senior midfielder
Casey McGuigan (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) found senior midfielder
Laela Brock (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), who sent a shot from the right side into the net.
In the 35th minute, Brock delivered a long pass to Marabondo, who beat the Scarlet-Raptors' keeper on a 1v1 for her second goal of the game.
Five minutes later, Brock got on the end of a
Jackie Gage (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) pass, drew the keeper out of the net and blasted the ball over her head.
Marabondo launched a blast from the left side into the back of the net at the 49:57 mark for the hat trick and her New Jersey Athletic Conference-leading 19th goal of the season.
Junior forward
Sheray Anthony (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) scored on a one-timer from the right side off a
Erika Juricic (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) pass in the 59th minute.
Anthony and Juricic later connected again, this time with Juricic scoring on a run up the right side less than four minutes later.
In the 87th minute, sophomore midfielder
Jessica Skowronski (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) found freshman midfielder
Elena Grady (Washington Twp., N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy), who put the ball in the lower right-hand corner for her first goal as a Pioneer.
The Pioneers did not give up a shot in the first half and outshot the Scarlet Raptors, 22-2.
Junior Mary
Jane Seiler (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) played the first half for WP and classmate Alyssa
Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) played the first 24:30 of the second half. Freshman
Kat Clint (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) played the last 20:30 for the Pioneers and made one save. Lauren West saved eight of the 12 shots she faced in the first half, and Leighanna Milby made one second-half stop for Rutgers-Camden.
With the three goals in this match, Marabondo currently has 44 points this fall, bettering the previous record of 40 established by Meg Renna in 2000 and matched by Amanda Kurdyla in 2007. Marabondo's 19 goals currently stands tied with Kurdyla's top mark of 19, also during the 2007 campaign. Marabondo's career totals of 58 goals and 133 points trail Kurdyla's records of 66 and 149, respectively.
William Paterson will visit Drew Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 4:30 p.m.
