Second-Straight OT Goal Sinks Women's Soccer

Pioneers Lose, 1-0, to Montclair State

BOX SCORE

WAYNE, N.J. – For the second straight match, the William Paterson women's soccer team (1-3, 0-2 NJAC) suffered an overtime loss against a conference opponent, this time a 1-0 decision against visiting  Montclair State (4-3, 1-1 NJAC) Sept. 21.

Sophomore Jenna Carroll ran onto a loose ball on the right flank and drove a looping ball from almost 25 yards out, tucking it under the crossbar for the night's only score.  The Pioneer loss came on the heels of a 3-2 double-overtime defeat for WP at New Jersey City Sept. 17.

During a first half that featured a combined six shots, it was the Pioneers who had the best scoring opportunity when junior Nicole Kufel (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) was just left of the frame, launching a deflection of a long free kick in the 42nd minute.

Montclair State had the majority of the run of play during the second period, including two excellent tries by Carroll.  Freshman Kaila Fasano picked up a loose ball on the right side of the box and just missed the upper-right corner of the goal with less than nine minutes on the clock.

The Pioneers had a late flurry during the closing minute after junior forward Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) was taken down just outside the box.  Kufel's strike was barely tipped away by MSU keeper Gina Policastro, handing WP a corner kick.  Senior Jessica Francisco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) got a head on Laela Brock's (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) kick, but it was headed away by a Red Hawk defender.  Brock again launched a corner kick and Policastro did well to punch Taylor Zabicki's (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) header over the bar as the final seconds of regulation expired.

Sophomore Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) made nine saves for WP, and Policastro had five for the Red Hawks.

William Paterson will play at Richard Stockton Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2:00 p.m.
