BOX SCORE
WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (1-5, 0-1 NJAC) fought hard to keep the game scoreless for 52 minutes, but No. 6 The College of New Jersey (3-1, 1-0 NJAC) took advantage of a scramble during a penalty corner to score the game's only goal, earning a 1-0 victory in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) field hockey opener for both schools Sept. 16.
After a 5-5 draw in penalty corners during the first half, the Lions cashed in on their increased pressure for the contest's lone score, as it came off one of TCNJ's 14 second-half corners. Freshman Victoria Martin finished an Erin Healy pass after the save of the first shot from the left wing.
Each side had chances during a more evenly-played opening 35 minutes, including a WP goal that was called off with less than 17 minutes remaining as the official ruled the ball touched an offensive player's foot.
Senior
Meghan Trivett (Highlands, N.J./Middletown North) had eight saves for William Paterson, and Shannon Syciarz made one stop for the Lions.
The Pioneers will visit Kean Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
