Field Hockey Shuts Out Wilkes, 3-0

Clayton, Boegly and Nendze Score for Pioneers

Sophomore Kellye Statz made nine saves against Wilkes for her first career shutout.
BOX SCORE

WAYNE, N.J. – Freshmen Taylor Clayton (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) and Lauren Boegly (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and sophomore Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) all found the back of the cage to lead the William Paterson field hockey team (3-10) to a 3-0 victory against Wilkes (2-8) Oct. 9 at Wightman Stadium.

Each team had chances during the first half, but WP goalie Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made two good saves on shots by Kaitlyn Bevans and Shelli Whittington during a penalty corner with less than 16 minutes remaining.  The Pioneers could not capitalize on two good opportunities just outside of the goal during a corner in the last two minutes, and the two teams entered the break scoreless.

WP broke through in the 42nd minute when Clayton scored at the near post off of a penalty corner.  The Pioneers doubled their lead 75 seconds later, as sophomore Jaclyn Bertos (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) raced down the right side of the field on an odd-player break and found Boegly in the center of the circle, who one-timed it past the goalie.

Another break down the right flank allowed Bertos to pass to Nendze at the near post, and she finished for her third goal of the season.

Statz had nine saves for her first career shutout, and senior Lindsey Davenport made nine stops for Wilkes.

William Paterson will host Stevens Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7:00 p.m.
