BOX SCORE

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (10-3-2, 4-2-1 NJAC) couldn't hold off No. 11 Rutgers-Camden (13-2-1, 5-0-1 NJAC), falling to the Scarlet Raptors, 2-1, Oct. 15 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Just five minutes into the match, junior Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) nearly gave the Pioneers an early lead, punching the ball from the right side and causing Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper Tim VanLiew to make a diving stop.  In the 15th minute another scoring opportunity arose for William Paterson when Michael Encarnacion (Franklin, N.J./Passaic County Tech) drilled a ball that hit the crossbar, missing the back of the net by inches.

After owning a 9-1 shot advantage in the first half, William Paterson finally capitalized as junior Dan Patton (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) finished a scramble in front of the box, assisted by Anthony Ferrer (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany), to hand the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage 1:55 into the second period.

Rutgers-Camden found the back of the net in the 63rd minute when VanLiew launched a ball downfield that was finished by Mitch Grotti, knotting the score at 1-1.

A penalty kick by Joe Auleta in the 85th minute proved to be the winning goal for the Scarlet Raptors, as WP was whistled for a hand ball in the box.  The Pioneers were close to tying the game with 75 seconds left, but Ferrer drilled a shot that bounced off the left post.

William Paterson owned a 15-8 shot advantage overall.   Senior Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) finished with four saves.  VanLiew registered 10 saves.

William Paterson will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 18, at St. Joseph's-Long Island at 7:00 p.m.
