Field Hockey Loses in Overtime, 3-2

Pioneers Fall to Visiting Stevens

Junior Ally Hartman had a goal and an assist against Stevens.
BOX SCORE

WAYNE, N.J. – Junior Mary Nikish deflected in a penalty corner 2:22 into overtime to give the Stevens field hockey team (7-5) a 3-2 victory at William Paterson (3-11) Oct. 12.

Nikish's finish of the Jillian Price assist was a sudden turn of events during the extra time.  After Lauren Boegly (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) was tripped on a breakaway, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty stroke just 31 seconds into the period.  However, William Paterson could not capitalize on the opportunity, as sophomore Jaclyn Bertos (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) missed wide left.

The Ducks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, converting on a penalty corner just 56 seconds into the game thanks to a goal by Megan Traub.  The Pioneers knotted things up 30 minutes later, as junior Ally Hartman (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Twp.) sent a cross to a waiting Boegly in the middle of the circle, and she beat Stevens goalie Gaby Sanchez for her fourth goal of the season.

Hartman handed William Paterson a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute, finishing from the middle of the circle off a pass from the left side by sophomore Jessica Nendze (West Milford, N.J./West Milford).  But just three minutes later, freshman Jillian Fiebel again evened things up, knocking in a ball off a scramble in front of the cage.

Sophomore goalie Kellye Statz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) made eight saves for WP, and Sanchez made one first-half stop.  Meg Collins and Jessie Huff did not have to make a save over a combined 34:02.

William Paterson will host No. 16 Rowan Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1:00 p.m.
