WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman Makia Sturgis scored the game-winning goal less than seven minutes into overtime to give Kean (7-1, 1-0 NJAC) a 2-1 field hockey victory at William Paterson (2-7, 0-2 NJAC) Sept. 28.
Sturgis knocked the ball in at the right post, connecting on an Amie Hoch pass from the center of the circle for the deciding goal.
After 20 minutes of play primarily between the circles, Kean had the first quality chance when Olivia Triano fired a shot off the post with less than 16 minutes remaining in the opening period. The Cougars had three other attempts that did not find the mark, but William Paterson took advantage of its one opportunity when freshman
Jacqui Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) turned and shot past Cougar goalie Lauren Dobbs, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with 1:08 on the clock.
Senior Kelly Mataya knotted the contest for Kean when she knocked in Hoch's pass off a penalty corner with 9:56 to play in the second half.

Meghan Trivett (Highlands, N.J./Middletown North) had six saves for William Paterson, and Dobbs was credited with the victory for Kean.
