Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Sophie Hart-Ruderman (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia), senior Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and sophomore Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) each scored a goal to lead the William Paterson women's soccer team (2-2-1) to a 3-2 victory over visiting FDU-Florham (1-3-1) in the Pioneers' home opener Sept. 11.

Senior Samantha Pena (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) cross from the left flag ricocheted off the right post and Hart-Ruderman knocked in the loose ball to give the Pioneers a lead in the 19th minute. FDU-Florham countered the Pioneer goal in the 33rd minute when senior Lora Fink fed a ball up the middle of the defense to classmate Brittany Kanickij, who finished the breakaway and tied the match.

The Pioneers were awarded a penalty kick 15 minutes into the second half, and Ruddy punched it in to the right side of the frame for a 2-1 edge. In the 72nd minute, Marabondo finished a rebound of a Laela Brock (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) shot, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage. That goal would prove to be important, as the Devils responded in the 84th minute when Fink one-timed a Kanickij pass, rocketing a ball to the upper-left corner of the goal from 18 yards out, to pull FDU-Florham within one at 3-2.

The Pioneers outshot the Devils 12-3, and owned a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. William Paterson had several other quality scoring opportunities, including a Heidi Rogers (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) header off the crossbar less than 10 minutes in, a Megan Droelle (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) chip just high of the bar with 7:30 remaining in the opening period, and a Marabondo second-half breakaway that she missed wide.

Freshman Mary Jane Seiler (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) picked up the win in goal for the Pioneers. Lauren Albrecht recorded five saves for FDU-Florham.

William Paterson will be back in action at Pioneer Soccer Park Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7:00 p.m. against Centenary.
