WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore
Kelsey Rella (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) swept in a pass at the post in the 80th minute to lift William Paterson (1-0) to a 1-0 overtime victory against visiting FDU-Florham (0-1) in field hockey action Sept. 1.
After being outshot 12-5 during regulation, the Pioneers began to get forward during the 7v7 extra time, and converted on their best chance of the contest thanks to a penalty corner. Rella's pass to the top of the circle eventually ended up on the stick of freshman
Annalis Mitcho (Glassboro, N.J./Gloucester County Institute of Technology), who found Rella on the left post. Rella buried the ball for her first career game-winning goal and WP's second-straight season-opening overtime victory.
FDU-Florham's best chance may have came 10 minutes into the contest, but Megan Springmeyer's shot was cleared off the line by Pioneer back
Shannon Thomas (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City).
Junior
Meghan Trivett (Highlands, N.J./Middletown North) made five saves for William Paterson. Tess Loughran had one stop for the Devils.
William Paterson will continue its four-game homestand Saturday, Sept. 4, against RPI at 1:00 p.m.
