WAYNE, N.J. – Head coach
Ed Gurka reached the 600-win plateau as the William Paterson women's swimming and diving team (9-1) defeated Division II Adelphi (1-4) by a 129-84 score Dec. 11 at Wightman Pool. The Pioneer men also defeated the Panthers, 131-97.
Gurka owns a 600-299-3 record during his 35th season as the Pioneers' head coach, leading the William Paterson women to a 312-148-3 mark and the men to a 288-151 record.
Freshman
Giuliana Trapani (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) was the lone double winner for the Pioneers, touching first in the 50 (26.66) and 100 (58.19) frees. Junior
Lesly Mendoza (Passaic, N.J./Paramus Catholic) won the 100 fly (1:06.57), classmate
Brett Kuchin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) registered a win in the 100 breast (1:12.90), and freshman
Katie Jeon (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) was victorious in the one-meter dive (111.85).
Lauren Carney (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), Kuchin, Mendoza and Trapani won the 200 medley relay (1:59.53), and
Taylor McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), Mendoza,
Stephanie Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and
Tara Graham (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) touched first in the 200 free relay (1:50.06).
William Paterson will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Queens at 6:00 p.m.
