WP will face the winner of the Oct. 30 first-round match between third-seeded Rowan and sixth-seeded Kean. Fourth-seeded Richard Stockton will host fifth-seeded New Jersey City in the other first-round match Oct. 30, and the winner will advance to play at top-seeded The College of New Jersey in the semifinals Nov. 3. After a first half that saw several crosses that the Pioneers were unable to get on the end of, it was the Cougars who found the back of the net in the second period. Sophomore Julianna Natale's shot from the left side was stopped by
Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley), but the Pioneer goalkeeper could not grab hold of the slippery ball, and junior Danielle Esposito pounced on the rebound for her seventh goal of the year and a 1-0 advantage in the 60th minute.
Kean made it a 2-0 score in the 81st minute when sophomore Carly Seidel cut back on the right side of the box and beat a charging Falduto to the far post.
Falduto had three saves for William Paterson. Senior Leandra Russo made three stops for Kean.
Prior to the match, the Pioneers honored their four seniors --
Vikki Cicak (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls),
Kathleen Maggi (New Milford, N.J./New Milford),
Samantha Pena (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) and
Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley).
