WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (7-2-2, 4-0-1 NJAC) stunned No. 11 Rowan (8-1-1, 4-1 NJAC), taking an early lead and then holding off the Profs for a 1-0 Homecoming victory Oct. 2 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Pioneers surged ahead 10 minutes into the contest when sophomore
Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) used a throw-in from the left corner by senior
Samantha Pena (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) and buried the ball into the back of the right side of the net. William Paterson had another scoring opportunity in the 26th minute when freshman
Sheray Anthony (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) snuck past the Profs' defense, but the run was ended by a save by Deana Wood at the left post. The Profs had two opportunities to score at the end of the first half off of corner kicks, but could not capitalize on the chances.
Rowan's Jess Babice had two early chances in the second half to spoil the Pioneer lead, but quality play by the defense and Pioneer goalkeeper
Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) inhibited the Profs' momentum. The Profs dominated play throughout the second half, and it wasn't until the last six minutes of the match that the Pioneers started to attack and create some pressure in the Rowan defensive third.
William Paterson and Rowan were closely matched in corner kicks, shots and fouls. Falduto and Wood each had four saves in the net.
William Paterson will host NYU Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7:00 p.m.
