CAMDEN, N.J. – Senior forward
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) became the Pioneers' career assists leader, but No. 25 William Paterson's (9-3-2, 4-2-1 NJAC) injury-depleted side could not get past Rutgers-Camden (8-7-1, 3-4 NJAC) in a 4-2 decision Oct. 16.
Valerio's assist on freshman
Kene Eze's (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) second goal of the day gave Valerio his 31st career assist, moving him past Adam Grossman (1994-97, 30) and Delvin Horsford (1994-97, 30) and giving him sole possession of first place on the William Paterson record chart.
Rutgers-Camden came out strong and built a 2-0 lead in the opening 11:28. Despite plenty of pressure and chances the rest of the way, the Pioneers never got closer than two goals.
C.J. Finley took a shot in the seventh minute that was kept out of the goal on a backsave, but he gathered up the rebound and scored the second-chance shot to give Rutgers-Camden a 1-0 lead 6:46 into the contest.
Less than five minutes later, freshman forward Mitch Grotti made it a 2-0 game when he ran onto Casey Doyle's feed near the top-right of the box and sent a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the left side of the net for a goal.
Rutgers-Camden had nine of the match's first 10 shots before William Paterson started applying its own pressure. By halftime, the Pioneers had cut the shot discrepancy to 9-8 and held a 7-1 margin in corner kicks, but the Scarlet Raptors still held their 2-0 lead.
Finley gave the Scarlet Raptors a 3-0 advantage early in the second half, taking a feed into the box from Shane McGrory to score his second goal at the 59:06 mark.
William Paterson finally broke the scoring ice at 71:01 when Eze ripped a shot from the top-left side of the box off the right post and into the net. Eight minutes later he had another golden scoring opportunity, but slid a shot outside the left post.
Finley added an insurance tally in the 82nd minute on the third assist of the game by McGrory. McGrory picked off an errant pass just outside the Pioneers' box and slid a square ball to Finley on the left side. Finley completed the hat trick for his seventh goal of the season.
Eze added his second goal of the game less than two minutes later, tapping in a Valerio corner kick after the Raptors failed to clear the ball out of the goal mouth.
William Paterson finished with a 19-13 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks. Raptor junior goalie Tim VanLiew made nine saves and was aided by a pair of backsaves in collecting the win. The Pioneers received four saves from junior keeper
Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional), who played the opening 59:09, while junior
Sam Gerais (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) finished up the contest without making a stop. William Paterson also received a save from one of its field players.
The Pioneers will look to get back on track Tuesday, Oct. 19, at home against St. Joseph's-Long Island at 7:00 p.m.
