Box Score

MADISON, N.J. – William Paterson's Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) scored twice to lead the Pioneer men's soccer team (2-0) to a 4-0 victory against Staten Island (0-2) Sept. 5 at the Drew Fall Fest.

After a long spell of heavy pressure, the Pioneers finally cracked the Dolphin defense in the 22nd minute as Anthony Ferrer (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) scored from the top of the 18-yard box off Amborgio Pipitone's (Parmamus, N.J./Paramus) assist. CSI's Andrew Brown kept the Dolphins close with a handful of terrific saves, but a well-worked goal saw the Pioneers double their lead. Ferrer played it wide to Bryan Manfria (Nutley, N.J./Nutley), who first-timed it across the goal to Valerio, who netted it with ease with eight minutes left in the half.

A beautiful free kick from Valerio gave the Pioneers their third goal of the night. From 20 yards out, the junior curled it inside the far post and past the helpless keeper during the 50th minute. Valerio then helped set up the fourth goal as well a minute later. A nice through ball from Jonathan Donado (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) got Valerio free outside the far post. Valerio's initial effort was saved by Brown, but Dom Busto (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) was first to the rebound with a sliding strike that found the back of the net.

Brown finished with 15 saves for the Dolphins. Pioneer senior Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) played the first 74:50 in goal, and Sam Gerais (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) finished off the final 15:10. Neither one was forced to make a save.

William Paterson will face host Drew in the second round of the Fall Festival on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 4:00 p.m.
