Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Megan Droelle (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) scored a hat trick, helping to lead William Paterson (4-4-2, 2-1-1 NJAC) to a 4-1 women's soccer victory against Rutgers-Newark (4-7, 0-4 NJAC) Sept. 30 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Droelle struck in the 22nd minute when freshman Laela Brock (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) played a ball into the box that Rutgers-Newark keeper Kat Renteria came off her line to chase down, but instead Droelle beat her to it and scored to the far left corner of the frame.

The sophomore's second goal of the afternoon came on a very similar play, this one a Brock shot that Renteria could not secure, allowing Droelle to run on and finish the loose ball from the right side of the box for a 2-0 Pioneer lead with 16:52 remaining in the opening period.

The Scarlet Raiders cut that advantage in half nine minutes later when sophomore Stefani Uthman dropped a pass off to classmate Liana Abreu, and Abreu finished from the left side of the box for her team-leading ninth goal of the year. However, the Pioneers answered when sophomore Heidi Rogers (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) punched in a loose ball after a corner kick and scramble inside the 18, making it a 3-1 game in the 41st minute.

Droelle found the back of the net again in the 85th minute, beating the keeper from the middle of the box after a cross by Margie Alfano (Randolph, N.J./West Orange) from the right end line.

Renteria had 11 saves for Rutgers-Newark, and senior Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) stopped two shots for William Paterson.

The Pioneers will play at Kean Saturday, Oct. 3, at 4:00 p.m.
