CAMDEN, N.J. – The Rutgers-Camden (3-4-1, 0-0-1 NJAC) and William Paterson (2-3-2, 0-0-1 NJAC) women's soccer teams each scored a first-half goal and went scoreless the rest of the way as they played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both teams Sept. 19 at Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
Rutgers-Camden scored early in the half at 12:23 when sophomore forward Samantha Sharp ran on to a through ball by senior midfielder Jessica Leoni and hit it past charging Pioneer senior keeper
Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls). Sharp found the net with her open-goal shot for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Pioneers, who put plenty of pressure on the Rutgers-Camden defense for most of the night, tied the score at 23:26 when senior midfielder
Sam Giancola (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) headed in a feed from sophomore midfielder
Ashley Grabowski (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge). Her shot, over Raptor junior keeper Vanessa Maia and just under the crossbar, produced her first goal of the season.
William Paterson out-shot Rutgers-Camden, 21-5, including a 12-2 margin in the opening half. The Pioneers also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams had a chance to break the tie as the Pioneers sent a shot off the crossbar and a Raptor chance in the second overtime was denied by a backsave.
That backsave was the lone save for the Pioneers, as Baker didn't record a stop. Maia had nine saves for the Lady Raptors.
William Paterson will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 23, when the Pioneers host Ramapo at 7:00 p.m.
