Box Score
WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (5-1-2, 0-0-1 NJAC) had several excellent chances late in the match to score the go-ahead goal, but the Pioneers were forced to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Rutgers-Camden (3-3-2, 0-0-1 NJAC) in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer season opener for both teams Sept. 19.
The Scarlet Raptors broke through in the 23rd minute when junior Rhyan Nelson headed in a long throw by freshman Casey Doyle.
The Pioneers evened the score with 19:59 remaining in the match, thanks to a
Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J./ Hunterdon Central Regional) header of a
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) corner kick.
William Paterson played a man up after Shane McGrory received his second yellow card of the match with 1:47 on the clock in the second half. The Pioneers threatened to find the back of the net on several occasions, including a flurry of attempts by
Ambrogio Pipitone (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) that were snuffed out by Rutgers-Camden keeper Tim VanLiew at the start of the second overtime period, and a dangerous loose ball that was cleared off the line by senior Chase Komer during the final 30 seconds of the match.
VanLiew had nine saves for Rutgers-Camden, while senior
Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) made two stops for William Paterson.
The Pioneers will next play Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Ramapo at 4:00 p.m.
