Senior Sam Giancola scored for the Pioneers against NYU.

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Senior Sam Giancola (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) scored to tie the match in the 25th minute, but NYU (8-3) found the back of the net during the 64th minute of play to defeat William Paterson (4-5-3) by a 2-1 score Oct. 7.

NYU struck first, finding the back of the net 9:33 into the action when Lucy Dolly Caires threaded a pretty through ball to Emily Jenkinson, who took two steps before beating William Paterson goalkeeper Erin Wydner (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) 1 v 1 with a right-footed blast from 10 yards out.

William Paterson tallied the equalizer at 24:15 after keeping the ball inside the box following an Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) corner kick. From there, Megan Droelle (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) connected with Giancola, whose blast into the top-right corner made the score 1-1. The Pioneers nearly pulled ahead on a few occasions during the latter part of the first half, but Rachael Ross (five saves) stopped two point-blank shots by Kathleen Maggi (New Milford, N.J./New Milford), and an attempt by Heidi Rogers (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) clanged off the crossbar.

Alex Walters stopped two shots while playing the second half to improve to 3-0-0 this season. Wydner made three saves in her first collegiate start for William Paterson.

Overall, the Violets owned a 12-11 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

William Paterson will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 14, at New Jersey City at 3:30 p.m.
