Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Junior Drea Wagoner's (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) header in the 83rd minute was all that William Paterson (6-6-3, 3-2-2 NJAC) needed to upset No. 16 The College of New Jersey (13-2, 5-2 NJAC), 1-0, Oct. 20 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

After a Lion foul along the left sideline, junior Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) played a long free kick into the box, where Wagoner was able to get her head on it and send it back across the grain and into the left side of the goal. Wagoner's strike, her third of the season and her second goal in as many days, came with 7:33 remaining in the contest.

In the 16-match series between the two schools, this marked the second victory for the Pioneers against TCNJ. The other was a 2-0 road victory during the 1998 season.

Both sides had chances to get on the scoreboard during the match's first 82 minutes, including a Briann McDonough shot off the crossbar for TCNJ less than four minutes in, and a loose ball in the box that William Paterson could not get cleanly to the goal line with 10:30 remaining before halftime.

The Pioneers had the best chance early in the second period, when sophomore Megan Droelle (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) was just wide from the middle of the box 10 minutes in. Droelle challenged TCNJ keeper Jessica Clarke several times midway through the half, and WP goalie Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) also had several excellent stops to keep it scoreless, including a punch over the bar of a Casey Caruso shot with less than 18 minutes remaining.

Clarke finished with two saves for the Lions, and Baker had seven for the Pioneers.

William Paterson will host Drew Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7:00 p.m.
