WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman Sophie Hart-Ruderman (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) found the back of the netting twice, including the game winner in the 67th minute, as the William Paterson women's soccer team (2-0) defeated FDU-Florham (0-2) 3-2 Sept. 6.

The Devils struck first, when a turnover by the WP defense resulted in a Lora Fink shot from 22 yards out that seemed to catch Pioneer goalkeeper Caitlin Kiernan (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) off-guard, giving FDU-Florham a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

Hart-Ruderman knotted the match with her first career goal in the 12th minute when she connected on a Kelly Bray (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) cross off a broken corner-kick play. Sophomore Margret Alfano (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) made it a 2-1 William Paterson advantage six minutes before halftime, knocking in freshman Jessica Bertoli's (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) cross from the left corner flag.

FDU-Florham fought back, evening the score 3:21 into the second period when Brittany Kanickij dribbled the ball up the middle of the defense and beat a charging Kiernan. That set up Hart-Ruderman's game winner, when she cleaned up a deflection of an Amanda Kurdyla (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) shot.

Kiernan made four saves for William Paterson, while Melanie Pierson had four first-half saves and Lauren Albrecht had five saves during the second period for FDU-Florham.

William Paterson will begin a two-match road swing Wednesday, Sept. 10, at St. Joseph's-Long Island at 4:00 p.m.
