NEW YORK, N.Y. – Head coach
Ed Gurka earned his 550th career victory as the William Paterson men's (2-1) and women's (3-1) swimming and diving teams swept host Baruch Nov. 8.
The Pioneer men earned a 106-81 victory, while the women were 111-76 winners. Gurka, in his 33rd season at William Paterson, now owns a men's career record of 265-144 and a women's mark of 285-141-3 for an overall record of 550-285-3.
On the women's side, three Pioneers were double winners. Sophomore
Kirsten Shea (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) finished first in the 200 IM (2:47.00) and the 100 breast (1:29.30), marking the first time during her career that she was a double winner. Senior
Grace McKay (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) touched first in the 200 free (2:19.80) and the 100 back (1:10.60), and classmate
Cathy Hartwell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) won the 50 (28.91) and 100 (1:03.87) frees. Freshman
Lesly Mendoza (Passaic, N.J./Paramus Catholic) rounded out the list of winners with a time of 1:14.81 in the 100 fly.
Senior
David Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) was the lone double winner for the William Paterson men, touching first in the 400 (4:38.00) and 800 (9:33.60) frees (all events in meters). Sophomore
Evan Seftel (Montville, N.J./Montville) won the 50 free (25.22), freshman
Kyle Smoragiewicz (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) finished first in the 100 fly (1:06.30), junior
Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) won the 200 IM (2:26.83), and classmate
Voyta Karas (Brno, Czech Republic) was the winner of the 100 free (55.70).
William Paterson will return to action Thursday, Nov. 13, at Lehman at 7:00 p.m.
