WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman midfielder Mary Swarthout scored 8:30 into overtime to lift Catholic University (14-7) to a 1-0 victory at top-seeded and 15th-ranked William Paterson (15-4) in the ECAC Field Hockey Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament Nov. 15.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals will advance to play at third-seeded Kean in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament final Sunday, Nov. 16, at 4:00 p.m.
Each team had a breakaway to start the first overtime period, but neither offensive player could get a shot on frame. Swarthout finally broke the ice with 6:30 remaining in the sudden-victory overtime period, beating Pioneer goalie
Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) across the goal and into the left corner of the boards.
Although the two teams combined for 12 penalty corners during the first half (10-2 in Catholic's favor), neither side had a quality chance until the 53rd minute, when the Pioneers'
Christina Ayusa (Runnemede, N.J./Triton) and
Meghan Hall (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) had their shots turned away by Catholic goalie Marian Cassilly and midfielder Ro Dixon.
In all, the Cardinals owned an overall 7-4 shot advantage and a 15-4 penalty-corner edge.
This marked the third straight year that William Paterson's season has ended with a last-second opponent goal in the ECAC Tournament. In 2006, the Pioneers lost at Catholic in the first round, 2-1 in overtime, and last year, top-seeded WP fell to Montclair State 1-0 in the semifinals after a Red Hawk goal with 46 seconds to play in regulation.
