Box Score
WAYNE, N.J. – A first-half penalty kick by senior forward
Amanda Kurdyla (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) lifted the William Paterson women's soccer team (9-0-1) to a 1-0 victory against visiting NYU (8-3) Oct. 8 at Pioneer Soccer Park. The Pioneers' victory snapped an eight-match win streak for the Violets.
It was Kurdyla's 14th goal in 10 matches this season. She entered today's non-conference showdown second in the NJAC in both goals and points (28).
William Paterson junior goalkeeper
Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) collected four saves, improving her record to 6-0 while earning a fourth shutout this season.
The game-winning goal occurred during the 16th minute, when Kurdyla, the Pioneers' all-time leading scorer, was taken down by the Violets inside the box. She was awarded a penalty kick, her second of the season, and deposited the ball in the upper right of the net and out of the reach of NYU's diving goalkeeper Alex Walters, handing the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
NYU quickly went on the offensive after the Pioneers' goal, racing up-field and taking three shots within the next two minutes, two of which were saved Baker.
During the second period, after Baker was drawn off her line by a Violets breakaway, senior midfielder
Dana Bertoli (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) raced toward the goal and cleared a shot by NYU sophomore Laura Palumbo. It was just one of many heady defensive plays from the Pioneers, emblematic of the total team effort that fueled the shutout victory.
William Paterson will host No. 15 Rowan on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 11, at 6:00 p.m.
