UNION, N.J. – William Paterson sophomore back
Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) scored the game-winning goal with just 49 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift the 14th-ranked Pioneers (9-0-2, 4-0-1 NJAC) to a 1-0 victory against host Kean (4-8-1, 0-5 NJAC) in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Oct. 4.
The Pioneers forced a corner kick with less than a minute remaining in the extra session, and sophomore
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) delivered the ball into the box, where sophomore
Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) headed it and DeMatteo knocked it in from the left side for the game winner. It marked the second straight match that DeMatteo scored the game winner, and his fourth goal of the year.
The Pioneers held an 18-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in the first half, while also taking seven corner kicks to Kean's one.
Junior goalkeeper
Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) made four saves in the victory. For Kean, sophomore goalkeeper Alfredo Oquendo had double-digit saves for the third time in the last four games, as he stopped 10 shots.
William Paterson will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 8, hosting U.S. Merchant Marine at 7:00 p.m.
