Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Ambrogio Pipitone (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) nearly matched his entire season total with five goals as the 14th-ranked William Paterson men's soccer team notched its 12th win of the season, a 6-0 decision against visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island (6-7-2) Oct. 21 at Pioneer Soccer Park.

For the Pioneers, now 12-2-2 this season, this marks their highest win total since the 1981 campaign when William Paterson finished the year with a 12-4-2 mark. The 1979 squad recorded the most victories in school history with a final 14-2-1 record.  The 6-0 result was the Pioneers' ninth shutout of the year, breaking the previous William Paterson single-season record of eight (1974).

The Pioneers got on to the scoreboard just 8:46 into the match when freshman Hussein Jaafar (North Bergen, N.J./Cliffside Park) and sophomore Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) strung together a pair of headers to Pipitone, who buried it to the lower-left of the goal for his seventh score of the year and a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles had their best chance of the opening period during the 25th minute, when Stephen Zaech played a ball to Julian Barreiros at the right corner of the six-yard box. Barreiros had a look at an open goal, but center back Cristhian Perez (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.) slid in and knocked the shot off the line.

Pipitone added his second goal of the day during the 26th minute, one-timing an Ali Omari (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) pass from the right end line to the center of the box. William Paterson carried the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Pipitone finished the hat trick in the 61st minute, finishing a long ball played by junior Jonathan Donado (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) up the left flank that he ran on to and beat the keeper 1v1. The two connected on a similar play eight minutes later, this time with Pipitone finishing from the right side of the box for the 4-0 edge.

Sophomore Daniel Sanchez (Prospect Park, N.J./Manchester Regional) found himself behind the Golden Eagles' back line in the 74th minute, and slid the ball across the box to a wide-open Pipitone, who knocked it home for his fifth goal of the day and his team-leading 11th strike of the year.

Sophomore Ryan Miller (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) finished the scoring with 22 seconds remaining, thanks to a Donado pass off a broken corner play that Miller easily finished. For Donado, it was his third assist of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) made five saves during the first 64:50 for the Pioneers, while freshman Sam Gerais (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) played the final 25:10 and made two stops.

For St. Joseph's, freshman Richard Zappa had three stops during 71:10 of action, and Robert Kuck made one save during 18:50 of play.

In a battle of the top two teams in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, No. 14 William Paterson will host No. 3 Montclair State Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:00 p.m.
