Box Score
WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomores
Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen) and
Julian Valerio (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) provided all of the offense that No. 14 William Paterson (8-0-2, 3-0-1 NJAC) needed, as the Pioneers earned a 2-0 victory against visiting Rutgers-Newark (6-5, 0-3 NJAC) in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer action Oct. 1 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
Playing on a slick field due to on-and-off rain showers, DeMatteo got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the 21st minute, burying a deflection of a Valerio free kick taken on the right flank. For DeMatteo, it was his third goal of the season. Valerio later finished the scoring, blasting a shot from the top of the box past the keeper during the 72nd minute for his seventh goal of the year.
William Paterson junior goalkeeper
Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) had four saves, notching his fifth shutout. Sophomore Kyle Perdelwitz made nine stops for the Scarlet Raiders, and he was aided by a clearance off the line by Mike Trenard during the first half.
William Paterson will return to action Saturday, Oct. 4, at Kean at 1:00 p.m. Rutgers-Newark will host Richard Stockton Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
