Pioneers Earn First NJAC Win, Defeat Stockton, 3-2

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (6-3, 1-2 NJAC) defeated Richard Stockton (4-3-1, 0-3 NJAC), 3-2, Sept. 22 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Freshman forward Danny Kusnic (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland) opened the scoring at 5:01 of the first half with his sixth career goal, finishing a low cross from sophomore midfielder Chris Tatro (Somerville, N.J./Somerville). The assist marked Tatro's first of the season.

Freshman defender Gary Barrell (Kent, England/The Towers School) capitalized on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, giving him his second career goal and extending the Pioneers' lead to 2-0 at 49:25.

Less than two minutes later, freshman defender Donald Davidson (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) gave the Pioneers a 3-0 lead when he knocked in a deflected shot from Kusnic, marking his first career goal.

The Ospreys quickly retaliated at 52:39, when sophomore forward Sean McCallum deflected a shot by junior forward Jason Bonnel, sliding the ball past the Pioneers' goalkeeper.

Junior midfielder Mike Holmes buried his third goal of the season at 61:13 when he took a cross from outside the box from senior defender Chris DePolis, and placed a header into the back of the net.

The Ospreys threatened overtime when freshman forward Rafael Duarte took a shot in the 86th minute which was cleared off the goal line by freshman defender Matthew Heitmann (Westwood, N.J./St. Joseph Regional).

Senior goalkeeper David Casper (Franklin, N.J./Timothy Christian) made three saves for the Pioneers and improved his record to 5-3. Junior keeper Tim McKenna made four stops.

“Our team is finally starting to come together,” said 16-year head coach Brian Woods. “I hope we can continue to play with the intensity and drive that our players had tonight.”

The Pioneers will play at Ramapo Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 4:00 p.m. before hosting Rowan Saturday, Sept. 29, at 5:00 p.m.
