MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior forward Tyler Masterson had a hand in both goals as 10th-ranked Montclair State (7-0-1, 2-0 NJAC) remained unbeaten with a 2-0 win against William Paterson (5-3, 0-2 NJAC) Sept. 19 at Sprague Field.
Senior goalkeeper
David Casper (Franklin, N.J./Timothy Christian) made four saves for the Pioneers.
A scoreless contest through the first 33 minutes of the game, the Red Hawks broke the deadlock as Masterson scored at the 34:02 mark. Senior Owen Nichols slid a pass from the left side onto the foot of Masterson, who knocked in a shot from the right side just past the outstretched arms of Casper for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Montclair State would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, William Paterson nearly tied the game as
Joe Strawman (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) headed a shot off a corner kick that MSU goalkeeper Nick Mele scooped up in front of the net.
The game would stand at the goal differential until the 66th minute when Chris Edelschein notched his third goal of the season. Masterson flicked a pass from the right side into the box, which Edelschein gathered before unleashing a shot inside the near post to give the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead.
